What is a wedding anniversary, and what can you make for it?

What is each wedding anniversary year called?

Each wedding anniversary has a traditional name based on a gift material, and the material gets more precious as the years add up. The famous ones are the Silver anniversary at 25 years, the Ruby at 40, the Golden at 50, the Diamond at 60, and Platinum at 70. The early years have gentler themes: the 1st is Paper, the 5th is Wood, the 10th is Tin.

Two things are worth knowing before you read the table. First, there are two lists in common use, a traditional one (the old gift materials) and a modern one that greeting-card and jewellery companies expanded last century, so the same year can have two different “correct” answers. Second, the early years differ a little between the US and UK traditions. In the US the 1st year is Paper and the 2nd is Cotton; in the UK those two are often swapped or given as either. The big milestone years (25th Silver, 40th Ruby, 50th Gold, 60th Diamond, 70th Platinum) are the same in both traditions, so you can rely on those whichever country you are in.

Naming anniversaries after silver and gold goes back centuries. Marking 25 and 50 years of marriage with silver and gold wreaths was recorded in Germanic countries as far back as the 1500s. The longer year-by-year list most people quote today was expanded and popularised in the US in 1937 by the American National Retail Jeweler Association, which is why the traditional and modern lists do not always agree.

In many South Indian families a couple’s landmark year is marked not as a Western “Diamond anniversary” but with an age-based ceremony. The best known is Shashtipoorthi (also written Sashtiabdapoorthi), which is celebrated when a person turns 60, and Sathabhishekam, celebrated around age 80. These are milestones of the individual’s age, not literally the couple’s 60th or 80th wedding anniversary, though they are held wedding-style and the couple often renew their vows, which is why they feel like a grand anniversary.
